A Sweet Little Herb
Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni is a small herbal plant from the sunflower family with origins from Paraguay. The natives used the leaves of this herb to counteract the bitter taste of the popular drink ‘mate tea’, and also as an herbal remedy for various ailments. Dry stevia leaves are about 40-60 times sweeter than sugar, steviol glycosides extracts are about 300 times sweeter than sugar.
A Natural Ingredient
Stevia extract is an ingredient from the stevia plant. It’s a safe, natural derived, 100% calorie free sweetener used to reduce sugar in foods and drinks. Stevia works perfectly in soft drinks, chocolate, sweets, ketchup, ice cream and other sweetened products and is a healthier alternative to artificial sweeteners and sugar.
A Sustainable Process
Stevia leaves contain sweet tasting components called steviol glycosides. These constituents are released by steeping dried stevia leaves in water, filtering and separating the liquid from the leaves and stems. When this liquid is further purified with food grade alcohol in a process very similar to the production of sugar, the result is a stevia extract. This extract consists of exactly the same sweet components as were found in the raw material, the stevia leaf. No degradation or change of the sweet constituents occur in the process.
